Episode 5

Teach Us Wisdom 17::39 minutes

Teach Us Wisdom brings the opera to a sober but hopeful conclusion, which emerges organically from the destruction of the previous episode. Language is restored to clarity, reconciled with music toward a mutual expression. As has been intimated all along, we see concretely in this episode that there are no warriors or Gods or refugees just human beings who know that they must unite in an effort to survive. The musical expansion also suggests this: first the melody passes among individual instrumentalists; then all the performers join in; finally the audience, too.

fragment from psalm 90

...you sweep us away like a dream;

we fade away like the grass.

In the morning it is green and flourishes:

When you are angry, all our days are gone;

we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

the span of our life is seventy years, perhaps in strength even eighty:

yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow,

for they pass away quickly and we are gone
